As a conference planner, I travel a fair amount for work. This means I am, more often than not, traveling alone. Occasionally I’ll have a co-worker along, but for the most part, it’s just me. I actually rather enjoy traveling by myself for the most part. I can go at my own pace, I don’t have to consult with others on what to do/where to go/what to see in my off time (if I have any). Eating alone in a restaurant gets a bad rap, but it’s actually kind of nice to sit at a table or the bar with my kindle, a drink and a little peace and quiet.
Traveling alone does have some drawbacks however. As an avid shutterbug, and not a big selfie person, it makes for a lot of landscape only pictures. More to the point, there are more than a few times that I don’t even make it out of the hotel, and the only pictures I get to take are from my hotel room or a lovely spot in a top floor meeting space/restaurant. These pics can be nice but can also get old after a while.

Roam’s Introduction to the World
I was on one of these trips back in 2018- a tradeshow for one of our biggest clients – when I came across a new friend. He was one of the tchotchkes that a sponsor was giving out. They had a ton left at the end of the event and were trying to get rid of as many as possible so they didn’t have to ship them back to the office. I saw him on the table and just knew I had to adopt him.
I brought him back to my room and that night posted him on my social media with a quest for my friends and family to help me name him. Thus Roam, got his name and a new home. To this day he still hangs off my backpack, coming along on all of my trips, and getting his picture snapped along the way.
Between a new position and COVID, Roam hasn’t gotten to do as much exploring as he would like, but we are looking forward to resuming travel later this year! In the meantime, you can always catch up on Roam’s past travels as well as his new adventures in the future on Instagram @PictureMeTraveling.
